12 questions to ask an interior designer before you sign

Choosing a studio · H Hue Design Studio, Nanakramguda

Take this list to your first two or three meetings. The answers will tell you more than the portfolio does.

About the people

  1. Who will design my home, and will that person stay on the project until handover?
  2. Who will be on site, and how often?
  3. Who do I call when something goes wrong, and how quickly do you reply?

About the design

  1. What drawings will I receive before work starts: plans, elevations, electrical and plumbing layouts, ceiling plans?
  2. How many rounds of changes are included in the design stage?
  3. Will I see 3D views of the main rooms, and how closely will the finished room match them?

About money

  1. Is the quote line by line, with sizes, materials and finishes named for every item?
  2. What is not included: civil work, appliances, lights, curtains, loose furniture?
  3. How are payments staged, and what has to be finished before each stage is due?

About the build and after

  1. How are changes during execution priced and scheduled?
  2. Which brands of board, hardware and laminate do you use, and can I see samples?
  3. What happens after handover if a shutter drops or a drawer jams?

How to read the answers

Clear, specific answers are a good sign. "Don't worry, we'll handle it" is not an answer. Write the answers down and compare them across studios; the differences are usually obvious once they sit side by side.
